Winchester, Virginia, Aug 13, 2024 – In a heartwarming display of community and athleticism, Frederick County Parks & Recreation has proudly presented The Laurel Center with a generous donation of $4,925.50, the proceeds from the 37th Loudoun Street Mile. This year’s event marked a new chapter in the race’s storied history, with Frederick County Parks & Recreation taking the reins following the retirement of long-time race director Mark Stickley, owner of Runners’ Retreat, who had passionately guided the event for over two decades.

Andrew Keefauver, Recreation Superintendent at Frederick County Parks & Recreation, expressed his enthusiasm for the successful transition and the significant impact of the event. “Taking over the Loudoun Street Mile was a tremendous honor and responsibility. We are thrilled not only to continue this cherished tradition but also to leverage it as a means to give back to our community,” Keefauver stated. “Seeing runners of all ages and abilities come together on Memorial Day, in the heart of downtown Winchester, is a powerful reminder of the event’s unifying spirit.”

The Loudoun Street Mile has become a cornerstone event in Winchester, drawing participants and spectators alike to the historic streets of downtown every Memorial Day. Its significance is further amplified by its role as a Collegiate Running Association championship and frequently as a Road Runners Club of America championship event, attracting elite athletes from across the nation. This blend of community spirit and competitive excellence underscores the race’s unique place in the local and national running calendar.

This year’s donation to The Laurel Center, an organization committed to assisting those affected by domestic and sexual violence, underscores the race’s broader mission beyond the finish line. “It’s about more than just running; it’s about making a tangible difference in people’s lives,” Keefauver added. “We are incredibly proud to support The Laurel Center’s vital work and look forward to continuing this partnership in the future.” The success of this year’s Loudoun Street Mile is also attributed to the generous support of our community sponsors, whose contributions played a vital role in making this event possible
